POLYJESTERS: complete collection - Modeled after the acoustic, swing jazz of Django Reinhardt and his incalculable influence across continents, the Polyjesters have since stirred in the spunk and spark of their easy going, playful temperaments, the wide appeal of modern folk, and the light, shuffley, feel-good buoyancy of alt. country and bluegrass to concoct a thoroughly warming, tingling collection, reminiscent of hot whiskey spreading from mouth to backbone. With an brief jaunt into hip-hop-meets-acoustic-pop, they haven't forgotten to throw in a wild card here and there along their way to capturing a bundle of creative innovation within a cherished and well-polished genre. Light on its feet, this album could most definitely be used as a natural mood-enhancer.
GAN BUA: gan bua - In the spirit of Dervish, Solas, Danu, and the like, this driving, flighty, bodhran-motored, Chicago-based band steps out into the light with their head-turning sound that can only come from top notch musicianship and immaculately-crisp delivery. Appealing to the need for lilting jigs and fourth-gear reels, Gan Bua takes their music several steps further, delivering more than the average pub group, which is plainly clear with their instantly palpable spirit that sweeps you off your feet- or, rather *on* your feet. If Irish music of any kind perks the heart rate, absolutely don't miss this.
AN DOCHAS: dragonfly - With the driving, contemporary brilliance of Lunasa, the sweetness and pure voice of Dervish and with a meeting of warmth and electricity, Andochas delivers fiery Irish traditional music with all the toppings. From uillean pipes jamming out with hand drums to the heartrending voice of Irish flute, dense guitar textures and backing support by full drumset, their new release, "Dragonfly," doesn't mess around when it comes to heel-kicking jigs and reels, served up with a modern context.
JOE MANNIX: white flag - Self-described as "Phil Ochs meets PF Sloan with The Band," one thing is for sure- this is dark and deep Americana that shouldn't be missed. With an exceptional talent to blend the accessibility of a gentle Pop style with the edgy and gutsy substance of Americana and Folk, Joe Mannix keep your ears perked up and the heart in waiting with his personable style that sings with the occasional stylistic references of David Gray and with the familiar and comfortable groove of 70's classic rock.
| PETER PUMA HEDLUND: vägen - It's a new year and time to try new things, push yourself a little, open your mind just a crack. If you have never heard of the nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish intrument that has evolved over a course of 600 years, and in sound, resembles a fiddle, there is no better time than the present to learn something. Made up of 16 strings including 3 melody strings, one drone string, and 12 sympathetic vibration strings, this is truly a fascinating instrument with a familiar and yet uniquely sweet sound. Peter presents both traditional and contemporary compositions, all of which speak from pure, elegant charm. Absolutely a delightful album.
