RoverselliROVERSELLI: loin, loin, loin - I love quaint things, odd things, quirky, irreverent and nutty things. I crave albums that tweak my imagination and inspire imaginary travels to faraway lands- this album does all that and more. It's a collage of so many heterogeneous textures and sounds that it's impossible to hold it in your head all at once.. but grab pieces of sassy French vocals, early jazz, quirk pop, folk, delta blues, country and hell, even a nod to hip hop.. and you'll have something of an idea of the expanse of this incredible album. It's like one of those movies you just have to see and can't possible describe.. like Amelie perhaps? Or Princess Mononoke? Either way, it's a must hear.. at least once. HEAR IT
MidlakeMIDLAKE: milkmaid grand army - With their playful, wistful and deliciously psychedelic tone, distorted, buzzy and pleasantly crackly, yet ultimately poppy (in the vein of Brit pop) composition, Midlake cuddles up to the the likes of the Flaming Lips and Grandaddy in musical vision and as whole, will undoubtedly thrill the fan of Radiohead or Rufus Wainwright as well. They seem to have a bottomless source of creativity, surprising emotional complexity, an unusual talent for production choices and textural innovation, that track after track, never loses its kinetic energy. Catering to the well-developed palate for indie fuzz, emo, and psychedelic Brit pop, this is one of the most memorable and solid albums to dance its way into the warehouse in quite some time. HEAR IT
spanglemakerSPANGLEMAKER: end of the gray - What happens when a guy with depth and edge lets down his guard, who's firmly planted feet make way for pop hooks that could make one giddy? Spanglemaker. Along the lines of Coldplay, U2, Travis, a hint of Billy Joel in the wings and Jeff Buckley, stirred with piano pop, bred with brit pop and smoothed together with a serrated knife, Spanglemaker is polished (with matte finish, not glossy) and forges the perfect balance between dark and bright. HEAR IT
ProjektorPROJEKTOR: red wolf glass - When you're looking for epic rock that makes you grit your teeth, clench your fists, squint your eyes and say, 'Yeeessss!" you want something with that built in angst but with some soul-padding too- something with give to it that ultimately stirs up all those things you're dissatisfied about. "Red Wolf Glass" is the perfect choice. Mixing the atmosphere and swirl of Brit Pop with the driving guitars and rhythms of brooding modern rock, one might be able to pick out bits of Swervedriver and Radiohead, but will, overall, be floored by that distinctive mix that just can't be pinned down except for with one word. Projecktor. HEAR IT
m-pactM-PACT: 2 - Connoisseurs of a cappella pop (I know you're out there!), this is your prized album of the week. Yes, I know you folks who follow the college groups and you definitely don't want to miss M-pact- if you haven't already been trailing them, which you probably have. Seriously, if you have an ear for razor-sharp intonation, ridiculously tight vocal harmony and sexy vocal percussion, put aside those Take 6 and Rockapella albums for a few days, slap on the headphones and hold on. And besides, with every album you buy, you get one digit of their phone number.HEAR IT
