IN THE BUFF: disturbing the quiet enjoyment of the home - In these exceedingly-creative, tightly-intertwined and musically-insightful arrangements of pop favorites from the Kinks, the Verve Pipe, U2, Boyz II Men, Collective Soul, A-ha, Eve 6, Guster and Semisonic, the University of Colorado's favorite pop a cappella group presents its first CD available through CD Baby. Founded in 1994 and still going strong, In the Buff has become somewhat of a cult on campus and has managed to keep its strong reputation for personality, humor and top-notch vocal performance as the years have passed, as the traditions have been passed from member to member. Put on a new set of ears and re-experience some of radio's most memorable songs- as they say, it's always better In the Buff.
JIMMIE K.: change - Having honed a skill that few artists recognize- that of emotional build, JimmieK uses this ability as a central technique on which to construct his songs. As a listener, you're going along with this a starting level of emotion and then with each new phrase, the bottom drops out and you find yourself sinking through several more layers of depth. It's almost like standing on a thin crust of ice, having sensation rush through you with each time you sink further. Forming a pearly layer around each song's inspiration, this beautiful, Brazilian voice cuts through the distraction and white noise of life's clutter. Outstanding male pop.
THE VALLEY ARENA: kinetic aesthetic - Often, life's most perfect treasures are beyond desription, beyond vocabulary. It goes against all instincts to try and compare this band to others but for a wee taste of what you're in for, The Valley Arena starts with hooks that grab you by your spine, an edgy grind that will have you gritting your teeth in pleasure, and a sharp-edged sound of reckless emo and focused punk for fans of Fugazi, No Knife, Q and Not U, and Cursive. Featuring emotional, stabbing guitar work and vocals that crackle through the texture, this rollercoaster ride of coarse, driving passion is one that you don't want to ignore.
WAKING: the maze ep - When crafting an explosive sound, a top notch hard rock band, it doesn't hurt to start with elements of some of the greatest bands of current day radio; so with a vocalist who's as strikingly powerful as Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, and with an aggressive musical drive closer to Staind, Waking kicks these elements into high gear and has unleashed an album of stop-what-you're-doing-who-the-heck-is-that?! caliber. If you're the slightest fan of modern hard rock, this is the next band you need to check out- you owe it to your sense of taste!
CRYPTIC VISION: moments of clarity - Okay, sometimes less is more. So let me say, if you are a confessed- or not confessed, die-hard fan of Kansas or Yes, this album belongs at home with you. You might think that these styles got lost in the 80s and you might not admit to your disappointment over that, but if it's powerful, kick-you-in-the-bottom prog rock you want, look no further. These guys take prog to the top with no room to expand any further. From their vocals to their hooks to their production, this is absolutely top notch. Even the Peter Cetera fan will find something to relish in.
