Playing: Just heard that the new Celine Dion album out Monday won't play in PCs... it's labelled as such on the front and back cover and on the "cd" itself. Hoped this might get into this week's issue, as it's the first time I know of that Sony have done this in the UK and the first major release with protection since the failed Natalie Imbruglia attempt last November. The title of the album - "A New Day Has Come". Indeed...

Playing: Windows ME. I play CDs only on my regular stereo and my computer.
Copying: Using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4, I was actually able to copy this CD normally as I would copy any other CD. I played the copy back and everything sounded fine, but when it got to the last track, "Nature Boy" (Track 16), there were sound imperfections like it was copied from a scratched CD or something. But the CD I copied from is brand new and is in perfect condition.
After this, I tried making a mix CD with songs from other CDs along with Track 16 from Celine's new CD. The other ones sound fine, but Track 16 is doing the same thing. After this I tried making MP3s of the tracks on Celine's CD, and I was able to convert the other tracks into MP3s just fine, EXCEPT on Track 16 it kept saying there were "sync errors" and it took a long time to make the MP3. When I tried playing it back, the same sound imperfections were present, while the other MP3s I made were fine.
I called the 800 number inside the CD to report a defect and the lady told me she would mail me a prepaid mailer to replace it. I asked if this was a corrupt CD and she said she had no idea, her job was just to send out mailers if people have problems with their merchandise. I told her I'll just take it back to the store I bought it at (Circuit City).

Copying: I wrote in last night about Track 16 on this CD being corrupt. Today I took the disc back to a different Circuit City location and exchanged it for a brand new disc. This one seems to copy just fine and there are no sound problems with Track 16. Also when I made an MP3 of it, there were no sync errors like with the other disc.
I have to wonder if they are testing these by not making the whole CD bad, just one track. I've never had an experience with a CD like this before.

(States that this CD is copy-protected) Copying: I was able to extract the first 14 tracs using Windac32 on my Plextor 12/10/32A. Tracs 15 to 17 needed conventional copying trough digital entry of my Soundboard! Clonecd-Copy on the same above mentioned Hardware worked well for the first 14 Tracks. Tracs 15 to 17 didn't play on my HIFI-Cd-Player. Alternate CDFS.vxd seems to work as well for the first 14 Songs.

Copying: The Mexican edition of this album features the same 17 songs as the European version, but does not include the alleged copy protection. It plays perfectly on my Compaq/Win ME PC and my DVD player too, and, if desired, can be extracted with EAC (I tried). It even has a color booklet and deluxe packaging, a normal thing for many local pressings from major labels, but a rarity when Mexican Sony is concerned.
