Corrupt CD Reports

From Melanie, batch # L385 9558 812710090 @ P10921-10Y
Playing: This DVD plays fine in my player.
Copying: The audio portion of this DVD is copy-protected. I tried to copy the audio signal to MiniDisc via the optical to mini-optical cable that came with my recorder. All I got was a high, piercing tone and a message on my recorder that said, "No copy" - which according to the owner's manual means the source disc is copy-protected.

Someone on your site mentions that the audio on the dvd Play by Moby is copy-protected because they are unable to copy the audio through the optical out of their dvd player to their minidisc recorder.

However this is the case with every dvd i have ever tried this with. DVDs have many kinds of copy protection. Encryption of the digital data, Macromedia protection, and simple protection codes that prevent you from making copies where the hardware would allow it, e.g. copying through the optical output. This is the case with almost all dvds. I have only seen one or two dvds that were not heavily copy protected (The french film Taxi is the only one i remember right now).

Most MGM films don't have macrovision but have css. While many studios such as Sony have macrovision and css. Again nearly all prevent copying the audio. This can be bypassed with a hardware device that removes the copyprotection bit from the audio stream. The cheap ones remove track marks, the expensive ones don't.
