One of the most important philosophers and scholars in Jewish history, Maimonides' work was not objected to until after his death. Orthodox rabbis objected to his sympathy for Aristotelian thought, seeing it as incompatible with Hebrew tradition. Attempts to reconcile scripture with secular rationality were condemned as heresy. A century later, in 1232, the work was banned in Jewish homes under penalty of excommunication. The rabbis approached the Dominican friars asking for their help in suppressing the book, and Maimonides gained the distinction of being the first Jewish scholar to have his works officially burned by the Church.
